Abstract

Although the State is a permanent presence in our lives, it was not always like this nor should we forget themultiple and arduous controversies that political philosophy has maintained and continues to maintain aboutits characteristics and legitimacy. In this work we intend to describe some of the fundamental milestones in thehistory of the concept of "State", starting from its origin as an independent notion in the 17th century, passingthrough its glorification at the beginning of the 19th century, to reach the three critical perspectives - Marxist,anarchist and liberal - that, since the second half of that same 19th century, have eroded confidence in it,opening the cracks in what was a solid structure and raising doubts regarding the health of the State in thepresent and, fundamentally, in the future.
