A HOME AWAY FROM HOME. RECONFIGURATIONS OF JEWISH DIASPORA ON RECONSTRUCTIONIST JUDAISMAbstractReconstruccionism is a minor branch of American Judaism, born within the conservative movement butindependent from this. The most important figure on its development is the Russian-American rabbi MordecaiKaplan (1881–1983). Among the most important traits of Reconstructionist Judaism we can find the idea ofJudaism as civilization, the modernization of Jewish traditions (including gender equality and integration ofLGBTQ community) and its commitment to Zionist ideals. It is an almost exclusively American form of Judaismthat places great value on diasporic communities, even in a world where the State of Israel is a reality.Taking as starting point Kaplan´s most important book, “Judaism as a Civilization: Toward a Reconstruction ofAmerican Jewish Life.”, and taking into account his later works (especially those following the establishmentof Israel in 1948), this paper attemps to search the most precisely American roots of Reconstructionist Judaism. From this, we try to find the new place and roles it confers to Diaspora, the process started after the SecondTemple destruction by the romans in 70 aD., in which the Jewish people was scattered around the globe, awayfrom its ancestral homeland, the Land of Israel.Key words: Judaism – Reconstionist Judaism – Zionism – Religion history
