PENNY DREADFUL: ENTRE LOS MITOS Y EL TERROR

Resumen

Una de las mayores preocupaciones del mundo contemporáneo gira en torno al cuerpo. El hedonismo esuna de las facetas constitutivas del mundo del consumo. Cuerpos perfectos, diferentes, posthumanos, setransforman en objetos simbólicos y nos interpelan.Si en los años 50 el cine era el rey innegable del entretenimiento, en la era de la “pantalla global” (Lipovetskyy Serroy, 2009), las pantallas se ha multiplicado: cine, televisión, tablets y smatphones, producen yreproducen la realidad. Es así como los temas y géneros parecen diversificarse en la oferta serial. No es deextrañar, pues, la necesidad de ofrecer una renovación constante, por lo cual abrevar en el mito constituye,muchas veces, una posible solución. El presente trabajo se propone analizar los moldes míticos queatraviesan la serie televisiva: Penny Dreadful (2014-2016), creada por John Logan. Esta coproducciónbritánico-estadounidense ha explorado el vampirismo, lo demoníaco, la licantropía, la vida artificial y laeterna juventud. ¿Por qué triunfa una serie de ficción cuyo entramado narrativo parece alejarse de nuestropresente? ¿No será que acaso la resemantización propuesta va en consonancia con nuestras actualesinquietudes: la violencia, la juventud, el sexo y el cuerpo? Intentaremos pues, reflexionar en esta dirección. PENNY DREADFUL: BETWEEN MYTHS AND HORRORAbstractOne of the contemporary world main concerns is set around the human body. Hedonism is one of theconstitutive aspects of the consumption world. Perfect bodies, different bodies, post-human bodies turn intosymbolic objects that question us. If in 1950’s cinema was the unquestionable entertainment king, in theglobal screen era (Lipovetsky y Serroy, 2009), the screens have multiplied: cinema, television, tablets andsmart phones produce and re-produce reality.This way, topics and genres seem to diversify in the media. Itis not a surprise that in the need to offer a constant renovation, to revolve the myth becomes, on manyoccasions, a possible solution.The present work intends to analyze the mythical patterns depicted on the television series “Penny Dreadfull”(2014-2016), created by John Logan. This British-American coproduction explored vampirism, lycantropy,artificial life, eternal youth and the demonic. Why is it that a fictional series with a narrative framework that isfar away from our present became a hit? Couldn’t it be that the new semantics proposed by the show matchour present concern: violence, youth, sex and body?
