AXEL HONNETH Y NANCY FRASER, CRITICAL THEORY OF CAPITALIST SOCIETY FOR THE CONTEXTUALIZATION OF THE STRUGGLES OF THE PRESENTAbstractWhen Hegel formulated the theory of recognition as a product of something obtained at the cost of a strugglebetween two self-consciousnesses, he did not think that 200 years later his theory would be extended toinclude the structure of social relations, personal identity and contempt. It was the German philosopher AxelHonneth who was responsible for the updating of the Hegelian theory of recognition and who faced the claimof the American philosopher Nancy Fraser. For Fraser, struggles for recognition were the conflict scheme of the late twentieth century, a scheme in whichthe groups's identities are better ranked than class interests as generators of political actions. But, warnsFraser, recognition is tempted by the depoliticization of the conflict and falls short when it comes to evaluatingjustice and redistribution. In the democratic welfare states, conflicts around resources were unleashed andthe discussion was fought in the distributive field. Our purpose is to evaluate the arguments of both philosophers to see the extent to which Honneth'srecognition theory can be complemented with Fraser's redistribution theory to be able to typify new socialconflicts from a critical theory of capitalist society.Key words: Honneth; Fraser; critical theory; struggles at present
