VICTORIA OCAMPO, UN ACERCAMIENTO A LA CULTURA NORTEAMERICANA: FRANK, HARLEM, STIEGLITZ Y OTROS ENCUENTROS

Resumen

El presente trabajo revisa el acercamiento de Victoria Ocampo a la cultura norteamericana y lo estudia a
través de algunos encuentros por ella descriptos en sus Testimonios. Allí, se hace referencia a la idea, que
tuvo Waldo Frank, de que ella encabezara una publicación americanista, idea que devino en la fundación de
la revista Sur. Por medio de sus cartas y testimonios, se analiza su identificación como argentina y como
americana. También se recupera su interés por distintas manifestaciones artísticas, culturales y religiosas
resultado de sus vivencias en sus viajes a Norteamérica. Se establece lo que significó para ella conocer a
Susan Sontag, sobre quien se expresó en términos de metáfora matrilineal y que tiene a Virginia Woolf como
antecedente. En estos ejemplos, se evidencia cómo, a pesar de las dificultades, Ocampo defiende sus
preferencias literarias y su postura como gestora cultural.

VICTORIA OCAMPO, AN APPROACH TO NORTH AMERICAN CULTURE: FRANK, HARLEM, STIEGLITZ AND OTHER ENCOUNTERS

Abstract

The current essay revises Victoria Ocampo’s approach to the North American culture and studies it through
some encounters described in her testimonies. There, she makes reference to Waldo Frank’s idea of her
heading an Americanist journal, an idea that became in the foundation of Sur magazine. Across her letters
and testimonies it is analyzed her identification as Argentinian and American. What is more, she recovers
her interest for different artistic, cultural and religious expressions, result of her experiences in her trips to
North America. It is stablished what meant to her knowing Susan Sontag about whom she expressed in
terms of matrilineal metaphor and which has Virginia Woolf as antecedent. In these examples, it is
evidenced how, in despite off difficulties, Ocampo stands for her literary preferences and her posture as a
cultural manager.
