METAPHYSICAL ELEMENTS IN T. S. ELIOT’S POETRY AbstractIt has frequently been noted that Eliot’s poetry relies heavily on rhetorical devices which he learnt from the metaphysicalpoets, such as the metaphysical conceit, the metaphysical wit, the references to the universal themes of time, life anddeath, love, the dramatic quality of the poems, or the sense of immediacy and audience. However, as the Modernist idealsof poetry in the twentieth century differed radically from those of the seventeenth century, it should not be assumed thatEliot’s use of devices traditionally associated with the metaphysical poets is the result of borrowing or simple imitation buta complex creative process of appropriation. Therefore, it is the purpose of this paper to examine Eliot’s appropriation ofmetaphysical devices and the ways in which he puts them to new use in order to fit the Modernist frame of mind. Throughan analysis of Eliot’s “Rhapsody on a Windy Night” (1911), it will be suggested that rather than accounting for the presenceof metaphysical devices in Eliot’s poetry as an instance of straightforward imitation, they should be viewed as the result ofa process of appropriation and resignificacion which, in Eliot’s poetry, builds a faithful portrait of the sensibilities andanxieties of modernist manKey words: metaphysical poetry; modernism; T.S.
