THE DISPOSSESSED: THE EROTICISM OF A UTOPIA-IN-PROGRESSAbstractAt the edge of the erotic abyss (as it has been thought out by Georges Bataille and, later on, by Anne Carson)the identity dissolves itself and is merged for a second with the other —the unknown—, which represents botha threat and the possibility of communion and transformation. What is truly revolutionary about eroticism is thisattack upon the subjectivity that struggles to remain identic to itself: the erotic experience drags the individualinto a dynamic process of reconstruction through the contact with what’s different. This idea recurs throughoutUrsula K. Le Guin’s, The dispossessed. At the center of the narrative lays the question about freedom: whatmakes an individual or a community truly free? The text’s answer will be the possibility of change, and truechange is the result of being in contact with the otherness. Therefore, the instant of erotic communion with theother becomes a fundamental experience in the main character’s search for the possibility of a free community. This is Shevek’s journey, always beyond the limits of his own known world.Key words: Ursula K. Le Guin; The dispossessed; eroticism; utopia; community
