¿UN NUEVO EXTRAÑO?: LA CONFIGURACIÓN DE UN SUBGÉNERO DEL HORROR, LA FANTASÍA Y LA CIENCIA FICCIÓN EN LA ANTOLOGÍA NEW WEIRD DE JEFF Y ANN VANDEMEER

El New Weird es una etiqueta que la prensa anglosajona ha utilizado en los
últimos años para englobar un conjunto de textos que combinan elementos
de la fantasía, el terror y la ciencia ficción. El origen de este mote se debe a
una antología publicada por Jeff y Ann Vandermeer en 2008, que recopila la
obra de varios autores de diferentes épocas, desde la segunda mitad de los
90 hasta el 2005, pero que también incluye textos publicados anteriormente.
El objetivo de nuestro trabajo será abordar este corpus desde una perspectiva
genérica y analizar cuáles son las características que permiten enmarcarlos
dentro de esta clasificación, delimitar sus influencias y definir su identidad y
su autonomía con respecto a otros subgéneros.
Para esto se partirá de la ya mencionada antología, y se tendrá en cuenta
el criterio de selección y clasificación, para poder determinar si el New
Weird existe como un subgénero o es simplemente un rótulo comercial o el
capricho de un autor.
IS THERE A NEW WEIRD? THE CREATION OF A HORROR SUB-GENRE, FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION IN THE NEW WEIRD ANTHOLOGY BY JEFF AND ANN WENDERMEER
ABSTRACT
The New Weird is a label that the Anglo-Saxon press has recently used to
bring together a group of texts that combine elements of fantasy, horror and
science fiction. The origin of this term can be found in the anthology published
by Jeff and Ann Vandermeer in 2008 that compiles the work of several authors
during different periods, covering the second half of the 1990s to 2005. It also
includes some other texts that were published before this time.
This paper intends to approach this corpus from a genre perspective and
analyse which characteristics they share to be framed within this classification,
narrow down their influences and define their identity and autonomy with
regard to other sub-genres.
The starting point will be the aforementioned anthology; the selection criteria
and classification will be taken into account to determine whether the New
Weird can be considered a sub-genre or just a label used for commercial
reasons or a whim of an author.
