This paper aims at analyzing contemporary Native American identity from the perspective of JauneQuick-to-See Smith, one of the most influential artists of Contemporary Native American Art. To thisend, through the analysis of her work The Red Mean: Self-portrait (1992), this paper will try to shed newlight on the identity that is constructed when Native American communities come in contact with thedominant society. In this regard, this research work will examine the concepts of identity proposed byStuart Hall (2010), Madan Sarup (1996) and Néstor García Canclini (1995; 2001) and then thehybridization processes that take place when two cultures meet, again from the perspective of GarcíaCanclini (2001).Downloads
