LOS CUATRO CUARTETOS COMO UN CORRELATO OBJETIVO DE LA EXPERIENCIA MÍSTICA

Resumen

La presencia de elementos espirituales en los Cuatro Cuartetos de Eliot, junto al interés del autor por el
misticismo, ha provocado la pregunta del presente trabajo. A la luz de las conferencias de William James
sobre misticismo, a las cuales Eliot asistió como estudiante en Harvard, surge el interrogante acerca de si los
poemas pueden ser leídos como un correlato objetivo de la experiencia mística. El análisis de las
características de la experiencia mística presentes en los cuartetos da cuenta del intento de Eliot de expresar
lo inexpresable. El surgimiento a lo largo del poema de los conceptos de inefabilidad, cualidad de
conocimiento, transitoriedad y pasividad deja al lector con una experiencia que trasciende las palabras.

THE FOUR QUARTETS AS AN OBJECTIVE CORRELATIVE OF MYSTICAL
EXPERIENCE

Abstract

The presence of spiritual elements in Eliot’s Four Quartets together, with Eliot’s interest in mysticism, have
sparked the thesis of the present paper. In the light of William James’s lectures on mysticism, which Eliot
attended when in Harvard, the question has emerged whether the poems could be analysed as an objective
correlative for a mystical experience. The analysis of the characteristics of a mystical experience present in
the Four Quartets provides evidence of Eliot’s attempt to express the inexpressible. The emergence of the
concepts of ineffability, noetic quality, transiency and passivity throughout the poem renders readers an
experience beyond the words themselves.
