El policial negro de Benjamin Black: Irlanda en la década de los cincuenta

Resumen

Este artículo comienza con una introducción teórica a la historia del género policial que apunta al policial
negro. Con el advenimiento de la novela negra norteamericana, el crimen individual conduce a la
investigación de un estado de sociedad. He aquí una de las funciones principales que cumple el género en
las novelas de Black. Se incluye también una introducción al subgénero best-seller. El estudio se
circunscribe a las novelas cuyo protagonista es Quirke, médico patólogo forense del Hospital of the Holy
Family, en Dublín. El análisis se concentra en la primera y última novela de la serie. Un apartado está
dedicado brevemente a la historia de Irlanda hasta la década de 1950, para explicar la estrecha alianza
entre la Iglesia Católica, el gobierno y la justicia irlandesa, todavía evidente en esa década, y que hace
responsables a esas instituciones de la mayoría de los crímenes que investiga Quirke.

Abstract
The article starts with a theoretical introduction to the history of the police genre centred on the hard-boiled
novel. With the advent of the American hard-boiled novel, the individual crime leads to the enquiry into a
state of society. This is one of the main functions of Benjamin Black’s hard-boiled fiction. The article also
includes and introduction to the best-seller sub-genre. The study explores the novels whose leading
character is Quirke, a forensic pathologist at the Holy Family Hospital in Dublin. The analysis focuses on the
first and last novels of the series. One section is briefly devoted to the history of Ireland in the 1950s in order
to explain the close alliance between the Catholic Church, the government and the Irish justice. Such alliance
was still evident in that decade, and those institutions are held responsible for the most of the crimes that
Quirke investigates.
