DE POETAS Y POÉTICAS: EDGAR LEE MASTERS Y CESARE PAVESE

Resumen

Para los lectores y los escritores, la literatura es un jardín de senderos que se bifurcan y, mucho más aún,que se entrecruzan y ponen en diálogo espacios, tiempos, existencias y voces. Éste es el caso de Edgar LeeMasters y Cesare Pavese.Como es sabido, el escritor piamontés fue una pieza fundamental en la introducción y difusión de la literaturanorteamericana en la Italia de los años ’30. Entre los numerosos ensayos que le dedicó a esa literatura, haytres de ellos en los que se centró especialmente en Edgar Lee Masters, quien era casi un desconocido porentonces. El autor de Lavorare stanca, como operador editorial central de la Einaudi, facilitó que la Antologíade Spoon River fuera traducida al italiano y publicada por esa importante casa editorial.Pero, más allá de todas estas cuestiones, Masters fue un poeta en el que Pavese reparó no sólo porque habíapuntos de contacto entre ambos y porque admiraba en el estadounidense cómo había logrado construir lospersonajes de la Antología de Spoon River, sino también porque al hablar de otro hablaba de sí mismo, desus intereses vinculados a temas tan centrales para él como eran el tiempo, la muerte y el destino.En este breve ensayo nos proponemos, por un lado, analizar cuáles son esos aspectos literarios relevantesque Pavese buscó señalar en la obra de Masters y, por otro, ponerlos en relación con sus inquietudesartísticas y personales. POETS AND POETICS: EDGAR LEE MASTERS AND CESARE PAVESEAbstractFor readers and writers, literature is a garden of paths which bifurcate, and even more, which crisscross andput into dialogue spaces, times, existences and voices. This is the case of Edgar Lee Masters and CesarePavese.As it is widely known, the Piedmontese writer was a fundamental piece in the introduction and diffusion ofAmerican literature in Italy in the ‘30s. Among the many essays that the writer dedicated to literature, there arethree of them in which he focused especially on Edgar Lee Masters, who was almost unknown at the time.The author of Lavorare stanca, as the central editor operator of Einaudi publishing, eased off the Spoon RiverAnthology to be translated into Italian and be published by that major publishing house.But, beyond these matters, Masters was a poet in which Pavese got interested in not only because of theirpoints of contact and how much he admired the way Masters had managed to build the characters of theSpoon River anthology, but also because specially when talking about others, Masters talked about himself,and his interests in relation to central themes for him such as time, death and destiny.In this brief essay we intend, on one hand, to analyze which those literary aspects are that Pavese sought topoint out in Masters' work, and on the other hand, to put them in relation to their artistic and personalconcerns.Key words: writer; reader; poetics; art; life
