Abstract

In some social spaces, it is still difficult to think of women as people, as subjects with decision and rights, not only with duties, and to also think of them as beings capable of producing and reinventing many situations that oppress and deny their existence. These new critical views of the role of women are now visible because of the rise of the intercultural paradigm that is constantly breaking with certain stereotypes, social mandates and hegemonic representations about the gender and its impact in society. This work is about teenage motherhood in the province of Salta in the year 2010. It analyses women who became mothers between the ages of 14 and 19, that is, who had at least one child before the age of 20. For this analysis, the National Census of Population, Households and Dwellings of the year 2010 is used. From that source, it is calculated the proportion of women between 14 and 19 years old, and the differences are analyzed in relation with their rural or urban place of residence and their level of education. The importance of each of these variables is also analyzed to understand the phenomenon of teenage motherhood: place of residence of the rural and urban population in Salta, and the highest level of education achieved. To conclude with this study, some preliminary considerations are written, upholding the need for an intercultural education, not only in schools but also in everyday life. Along with the communicative competences and with the decolonial thinking, intercultural education will allow for a genuine interaction of other kinds of behaviour, ways of thinking, feeling and acting in the world. For example, understanding women from an ontological perspective, understanding that motherhood is not a social mandate but a deliberate plan of women whose decisions are taken as they are empowered with the knowledge and education that allow them to defend and recognize their rights.
