LA HISTORIA DE LA SOLEDAD EN THE HISTORY OF LOVE, DE NICOLE KRAUSS

Resumen

Las manifestaciones de la soledad tienen numerosas tonalidades. Podemos acercarnos desde dos perspectivas básicas: como una cualidad inherente a nuestra condición humana o como el comportamiento, sentimiento o estado de la mente que surge de vivir en un determinado espacio. En el primer caso, la soledad es una cualidad esencial de nuestra naturaleza humana y parte de nuestra existencia. El escritor mexicano Octavio Paz (1998) reflexiona que El hombre es el único ser que se siente solo y el único que es búsqueda de otro.Hay otra manifestación de soledad que puede adoptar formas más severas. Una de ellas es la autoalienación, es decir, ser extranjero, rebelde en el propio espacio social. La novela The History of Love (2005) de Nicole Krauss se abre al lector y muestra un abanico de sentimientos y comportamientos.
Ninguna historia del amor puede aprehenderse sin transitar la historia de la
soledad, la historia de la tristeza, la historia del rencor, entre muchas otras.
En esta presentación, intentamos mostrar que en el texto de Krauss, las
manifestaciones de la soledad son múltiples y se encarnan, especialmente,
en los personajes de Leopold Gurski y de Emanuel Chaim ‘Bird’ Singer.

THE HISTORY OF LONELINESS IN THE HISTORY OF LOVE BY NICOLE KRAUSS

ABSTRACT

Loneliness can be manifested in several ways. We can approach them from
two basic perspectives: as a quality inherent in our human condition or as the
behavior, feeling or state of mind that arises from living in a certain space.
In the first case, loneliness is an essential quality of our human nature and
part of our existence. The Mexican writer Octavio Paz (1998) expresses that
“Man is the only being that feels lonely and the only one that is searching
for another”. There is another manifestation of loneliness that can take more
severe forms. One of them is self-alienation, that is, to be a foreigner, a
rebel in one’s social space. The novel The History of Love (2005) by Nicole
Krauss displays a range of feelings and behaviors. No history of love can be
apprehended without going through the history of loneliness, the history of
sadness, the history of resentment, among many others. In this presentation,
we try to show that in Krauss’s text, the manifestations of loneliness are
multiple and embodied, especially, in the characters of Leopold Gurski and
Emanuel Chaim ‘Bird’ Singer.
