GLOBALIZACIÓN EN LA ERA CLINTON: IMPACTO INTERCULTURAL DE SU POLÍTICA INTERIOR Y EXTERIOR

Resumen

En la era de la globalización, el contacto y la comunicación entre pueblos, comunidades e individuos se
intensifica. Sin embargo, al momento de considerar estas interacciones de alteridad, no basta con afirmar la
diferencia, sino que se vuelve necesario superar las posibles desigualdades, promoviendo la integración y
convivencia armónica entre culturas, en una relación de horizontalidad (Canclini 2005, p.55). William J.
Clinton, quien fuera presidente de los Estados Unidos en los albores del nuevo milenio, es reconocido hoy
por sus intenciones de transformar Estados Unidos en un país que, más allá de reconocer la diferencia en
Norteamérica, abrazara la diversidad y buscara corregir las desigualdades, fomentando el diálogo, el
intercambio y el encuentro. Por ello, el presente trabajo se propone analizar las medidas tomadas por el el
presidente Clinton para garantizar la convivencia, tanto a nivel nacional como internacional, y estudiar su
impacto sobre las minorías culturales, en particular sobre la amerindia1 y la judía.

GLOBALIZATION IN THE CLINTON ERA: INTERCULTURAL IMPACT OF HIS HOME AND FOREIGN POLICY

Abstract

In the era of globalization, the contact and communication among different peoples, communities and
individuals have intensified However, when considering these interactions of alterity, it is not enough to simply
assert difference, but rather it becomes necessary to overcome the eventual inequalities that may arise, by
promoting the integration and harmonic coexistence among cultures, in a horizontal relationship (Canclini
2005, p.55). William J. Clinton, who was president of the United States at the turn of the new millennium, has
been recognized in his efforts to transform the United States into a country that, beyond recognizing difference
in America, would embrace diversity and would be willing to redress inequalities, by fostering dialogue,
exchange, and a real encounter with the other. Thus, the aim of this paper is to analyze the different measures
taken by president Clinton in order to safeguard peaceful and harmonic coexistence, at both national and
international levels, and study their impact on cultural minorities, in particular on Native Americans and the
Jewish community.
