AMERICAN HORROR STORY’S ASYLUM: DEL RELATO A LA SITUACIÓN DE LOS PACIENTES PSIQUIÁTRICOS EN LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DE 1960

Abstract

La presente comunicación trabaja sobre la serie televisiva estadounidense
American Horror Story, en particular la temporada denominada Asylum,
con el fin de vincular el relato con la situación de la salud mental y la
institucionalización de pacientes en los Estados Unidos de la década de 1960.
Se propone explorar el impacto que produjo en su momento la publicación
del texto de E. Goffman, Asylums: Essays on the Social Situation of Mental
Patients and Other Inmates de 1961, con especial atención a su teoría sobre
la “institución total” y el significado e impacto de la hospitalización mental
para los pacientes en el contexto mencionado.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY’S ASYLUM: FROM THE STORY TO THE SITUATION OF PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS IN 1960’S AMERICA

ABSTRACT

This paper explores the American television series American Horror Story, in
particular the second season called Asylum, in order to connect the fictional
story with the situation of mental health and the institutionalization of patients
in 1960’s America. The main objective is to explore the impact produced at
the time by the publication of E. Goffman’s text, Asylums: Essays on the
Social Situation of Mental Patients and Other Inmates (1961), with special
attention to his theory about the “total institution” and the meaning and impact
of mental hospitalization on patients in this context.
