Abstract

This work explores two novels by American author John Irving, The World According to Garp (1976) and The
Hotel New Hampshire (1981) and focuses on the construction of the Austrian city of Vienna that these texts
reproduce. Irving provides his views on the function of art in general and literature in the first novel and a
counter discourse on human sexuality in the second. The author examines these issues from Vienna as the
locus of reference.
